Cory Miller leads Holy Cross hot bats in playoff run

Holy Cross shortstop Cory Miller led the charge with a 4-for-4, 6 RBIs performance as the Crusaders defeated Mid Valley, 13-0, in a District 2 Class AA quarterfinal win Tuesday, May 24.

Miller’s performance included a double and two homers in the 16-hit attack which ended with the 10-run rule and the Crusaders coming to bat only four times.

The clutch Miller also scored four runs.

Senior R.J. Boyle picked up his seventh win of the season with five shutout innings.

The win extended Holy Cross to a 15-2 record for the season under veteran baseball coach Sandy Menichetti.

Austin Shattin had three hits, including a double and home run, three runs and four RBIs.

Holy Cross senior cleanup hitter J.J. Backus went three-for-four with a run and an RBI.

Pitcher Boyle had two hits and scored three runs.

Jake Donlin and Sean Homenchak doubled for Mid Valley (11-5).

Holy Cross defeated Wyoming Seminary, 8-5, in a District 2 Class AA first-round game Friday, May 20.

Casey Connolly hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the third-seeded Crusaders to the big win over No. 14 Wyoming Seminary.

Miller swung a big bat in this contest. He had two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs.

Austin Shattin had two RBIs and the powerful Backus doubled and drove in a run.

The Crusaders trailed, 5-3, entering the bottom of the sixth.

Connolly had two hits, including the huge homer, two runs and the three RBIs.

Holy Cross defeated Lakeland, 11-5. Thursday, May 19, to claim the Lackawanna League Division III crown.

Boyle hurled eight strong innings and drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth that had 11 Crusaders come to bat. Holy Cross scored six runs in the inning in the Lackawanna League Division III title game at Carbondale Area High School.

The steady Miller swung the hot bat in this game too. He had three hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in three runs.

Austin Shattin hit a triple and drove in three runs.

Josh Mies had two hits, including a double, and scored three times.

Connolly hit a double, drove in a run and scored a run.

Trailing, 5-3, in the top of the seventh, Connolly started the Holy Cross rally with a double and scored on a one-out single by Miller. Austin Shattin tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center.

Alec Shattin started the ninth with a single. Mies bunted. An errant throw for an error placed runners on second and third.

Boyle hit a single and the Crusaders had the lead. Miller had a base hit to drive in another run and a 7-5 Holy Cross lead.

Austin Shattin then drove a pitch deep to the fence in right for a two-run triple and 9-5 lead.

Two more base hits by Connolly and Alec Shattin gave the Crusaders an 11-5 lead.

Lakeland loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Timmy Murphy got out of the jam to pick up a big save.

Jordan Art had two hits, including a double, scored a run and drove in two for Lakeland.
