The Diocese of Scranton will host the Sixth Annual Vocations Golf Classic Monday, July 13 at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Club in Mountaintop to benefit the St. John Vianney Endowment Fund. St. Vianney is the patron of parish priests. The endowment accepts restricted donations for fostering vocations and assisting seminarians.
The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, is honorary chair and will be golfing in the tournament which features a captain and crew format on the 27-hole course. The day begins with lunch at 11:00 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon and a reception and awards dinner immediately following play. Reverend Donald J. Williams, diocesan director of vocations and director of seminarians, is event chair.
“Faithful parishioners and friends throughout the 11 counties of the Diocese of Scranton continue to attend and support this annual event which raises needed funds to foster and assist future priests on their journey to serve the people of our Diocese,” said Bishop Bambera. Donations to the previous Vocations Golf Classics have raised more than $440,000 for the Vianney fund.
Identifying men to consider the priesthood and guiding each through a discernment process is part of the vital work of the Diocesan Vocations Office, explained Father Williams. It is also a concern that any man contemplating the priesthood would not be deterred by prior financial obligations.
“As a Diocese, we are blessed today with good men in seminarian formation,” said Father Williams. “Through the cooperation of our priests and parishioners, we’re also engaging a significant number of potential candidates who may one day be of priestly service to the Diocese.”
“I join with our Bishop and the golf committee in urging everyone to consider making a donation honoring a friend or loved one,” he added. “All gifts in support of our seminarians are appreciated. The tournament provides an opportunity for golfers, sponsors and seminarians to meet informally and enjoy a relaxing day outdoors.”
Members of the golf committee include Jim Bebla, Diocesan secretary for development; John Callahan, Reverend David Cappelloni; Karen Clifford; Thomas Considine; Christopher DiMattio; Reverend Joseph Evanko; Reverend Paul Fontanella; Frank Hine; John Kearney; Thomas Medico; Monsignor Donald McAndrews; Attorney Joseph O’Brien; Frank Orlando; Kathy Oven; Dominic Rinaldi; David Roche; Marilouise Agnone Ruane, director of stewardship; Mark Soprano; Roseann Tedesco; and Reverend Jeffrey Walsh.
Donations of any amount are welcome. Golfer packages at $250 include cart and green fees, lunch, dinner and reception. Hole sponsorships are $100. Information is available by calling the Diocesan Development Office at 570-207-2250 or online at www.DioceseofScranton.org.
